La Milpa was probably the most unique place we visited in Belize; it's a remote research station in the Rio Bravo nature preserve run by the Program For Belize. It's two hours of bumpy dirt roads from Orange Walk, and consists of a collection of thatched-roof buildings in a clearing in the middle of the rainforest. It's surrounded by jungle, and a few miles from the La Milpa Mayan site, the third largest in Belize.
Unlike Lamanai, it's largely unclaimed from the jungle, and like the jungle trails, provides a great peek into the biodiversity that thrives in the rainforest. The plants and animals here truly showcase survival of the fittest: everything is well camouflaged, well defended, or both.
