After skiing and snowboarding Alyeska, and exploring some more of Alaska, we had one last adventure flying to Mount McKinley. A ski-equipped bush plane took off from the frozen Lake Hood and took 7 of us north out of Anchorage.
As the city fell rapidly fell away to wilderness, we finally understood the locals' claims of how insignificant their roads are in comparison to the expansiveness of the land. After sighting a few moose and snowmobiles from 700 feet, we climbed higher as we approached the looming Mount McKinley. At 20,320 feet, it's the highest mountain peak in North America and the focal point of Denali National Park. We flew in over one of it's many glaciers, and wound through the smaller peaks and canyons that surround the summit.
Each glacier had a different texture to their distinctive blue ice, and to the side of one there's even a small mountain house. It's a photographers paradise; I can only hope these capture a hint of the awe of flying through such majestic mountains.
