Our group of 25 adventurous King of Prussia Ski Club members flew 10 hours to ski Alyeska in Alaska, about an hour from Anchorage. From the base of the mountain at the Alyeska Prince Hotel, we had four clear, sunny, and cold days to explore the mountain. We found plenty of fast groomers, lots of bumps in the bowl, and more challenging natural terrain on the North Face.
There were great views of the surrounding Chugach mountain range and of the Turnagain Arm extension of Cook Inlet below. The arm is named for the explorers who had to turn around again after finding its 28-foot tide a hazard to navigation. As the tide rushes in and out, it mixes silt and ice into a rocky-looking concoction.
After tackling the mountain, we spent a few days exploring the rest of Alaska, including Mount McKinley.
