Coming to America is one of those very quotable movie that any self-respecting guy can spout lines from, and even 20 years later it proves some aspects of dating are timeless:
Semmi: But where in New York can one find a woman with grace, elegance, taste and culture? A woman suitable for a king.
Prince Akeem, Semmi: Queens!
They got one point right: go to the city. Much to my chagrin, the greater population of cities and larger proportion of young people means more options no matter how you go about dating.
Prince Akeem: But how can a man get excited about a woman he’s never seen?
True for arranged marriages, blind dates, and webcam-shy Internet daters. Numerous studies have shown we’re still rely very much on visual attraction.
Prince Akeem: Is it just me, or does every woman in New York have a severe emotional problem?
Strike the New York qualifier and make that equal opportunity madness; everyone picks up a bit of baggage and falls into unrealistic expectations. You could even argue that talk shows and reality TV shows have encouraged people to embrace their extremes.
Clarence: Well, that’s where you messed up, son, you can’t go to no bar to find a nice woman. You gotta go to a nice place, a quiet place like a library, there’s good women there and ‘erm, church, they’re good girls.
There’s this cultural myth that bars are the place to meet, yet everyone says they’re tired of the bar scene. I don’t see libraries or churches as major hangouts, either, though. In the end, they actually meet at a community event, so perhaps the real advice here is just to get out, get involved, and mingle.
