Getting a Job is a Job

I’ve been amazed at how fast and intense my job hunt has become. Talking to folks who have been through the process in the last couple years, I was expecting a rather slow, six-month slog. Instead, things have come fast and furious within a few weeks - perhaps one of the benefits of being a mid-level technical candidate with lots of options as opposed to a higher-level project manager competing for fewer slots.

The flip side of all the attention is that it’s almost like having a second job; complicated by the fact that it’s overlapping in time with the first one and you’re trying to keep the whole thing a secret! I’m running down my cell phone battery every day, ducking into vacant offices to take calls from recruiters, and stealthily slipping from my cube to dash home and jump into my suit for an interview.

After my day job ends, I’m back on the phone returning calls, taking phone screens, and doing my “homework” - researching company’s websites so I have intelligent questions to ask. Not to mention trying to keep straight which company is which, and who the opportunity came through.

It’s exciting, but exhausting. I’m looking forward to closing a deal and taking a bit of vacation before actually starting the new gig!
